September 28th’s meeting:
After the initial business meeting we will have two parts to our
September meeting. We will have a guest: Dan Wells. (See more on page 2) HOW TO PROMOTE YOUR CAREER (WWW.GRANBURYWRITERSBLOC.COM) and social media Katie Carpenter and Peggy Freeman will present a program on tips to promote your career as an author. Don’t wait until you sell your first book to start this process. You start today. Katie will teach how to make a new Instagram, how to set it up, how to gather more followers, and what to post versus what not to post as an author. Peggy will show how to access our website, use the member’s forum, post a member webpage. If time remains we will do a short Pinterest demo. Bring your smart phone, ipad, laptop or note pad and pen.
Dan is a test pilot with AgustaWestland. After retiring from the U.S. Army where he’d been a helicopter pilot, a graduate of the U.S. Navy’s test pilot program, and an assignment to work with the U.S. Air Force in evaluating and testing the CV-22 Osprey he went to work for Bell Helicopter as a test pilot for the CV-22 Osprey, a tilt-rotor aircraft. Bell had a partnership with a European company, AgustaWestland, for development of a smaller tilt-rotor aircraft for the commercial market. Bell left that partnership, leaving the AW-609 tilt-rotor to AgustaWestland and Dan went with the aircraft. Testing for both tilt-rotor aircraft are based out of Arlington’s Municipal Airport. We will view a short video (3-4 minutes) on the V960 tilt-rotor aircraft after which Dan will talk for a few minutes (15-20) about the character traits common among test pilots, what traits should be present in any test pilot one of us might write about, and what he has seen in other portrayals that is unrealistic. Our members will have a chance to ask questions. It is my intent to have a guest like this every other month, if not more often, to help with research into our characters. There will be a homework assignment: for the October meeting each member is asked to write something, 2-5 pages
